Mechanical Watches – the focus of development

In the last few decades we have to become used to reporting on the development of electronic watches with even more functions than even Dick Tracy dreamed of.

Its encouraging to report that it seems that mechanical watches are now the focus of development.

Recent reports that Patek Philippe is reviewing the shape of the teeth in manual winding mechanisms to make them smoother and more efficient is really looking at the basics of watch design.

Patek has also produced an escape wheel etched from solid silicon to operate as a component of a lever escapement.  The result is an escapement with very low friction which requires no lubrication.
